Elementary School Basketball Programs
Fun-first basketball programs for K–5th grade athletes on the Emerald Coast. Little Ballers (K–2nd) and Junior Program (3rd–5th) at FCP Sports in Fort Walton Beach.
Why Elementary School Is the Best Time to Start Basketball
The window between Kindergarten and 5th grade is the most important developmental period in an athlete’s life — and most parents don’t realize it until it’s already passed. At FCP Sports, we built our elementary programs around one simple truth: kids who fall in love with basketball early stay with it longer, develop faster, and have more fun doing it.
This is not about pressure, rankings, or tryouts. It’s about giving your child a sport they’ll carry with them for the rest of their life.
Little Ballers — Kindergarten Through 2nd Grade
Our Little Ballers program is designed for kids ages 5–7 who are learning what a basketball even is. Sessions are 45 minutes of structured play, movement games, and age-appropriate fundamentals. We teach dribbling with two hands before we ever ask for one. We teach how to follow directions before we teach how to set a screen.
What Little Ballers covers:
- Coordination and body control through movement games
- Ball-handling basics: bouncing, catching, passing
- Shooting form — muscle memory built right from the start
- Listening skills and sportsmanship
- Making friends and loving the game
Every coach in our Little Ballers program has passed a background check and completed youth development training. Your 5-year-old is in good hands.
Junior Program — 3rd Through 5th Grade
By 3rd grade, athletes are ready for more structure. The Junior Program introduces real basketball concepts — dribble-drive, defensive positioning, reading the floor — while keeping the environment fun and low-pressure. This is where athletes from Plew Elementary in Niceville, Destin Elementary, Eglin Elementary, and Bob Sikes Elementary in Crestview start building the foundation that will carry them into middle school.
What the Junior Program covers:
- Dribbling combinations and ball security under pressure
- Passing: chest pass, bounce pass, overhead pass
- Shooting off the dribble and from set positions
- Basic offensive and defensive concepts
- 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 game play
What Parents Should Expect
We know you have questions — we get them every week. Here’s what to expect when you enroll your child:
Week 1: Your child gets a brief skills check-in (informal, not a tryout) so coaches can match them to the right group within the program. Kids think it’s just another drill. It is — but it also tells coaches everything they need to know.
Weeks 2–4: Fundamentals and routines get established. Your child learns the gym rules, the coach names, and starts building confidence with the ball.
Ongoing: Progress updates come from coaches directly. You can ask a coach at pickup or reach out anytime. We’re not a drop-off operation — we’re a community.
Sessions run after school and on weekends. We have athletes coming directly from Holley-Navarre Primary, Bluewater Elementary in Niceville, Antioch Elementary in Crestview, and Florosa Elementary right here in Fort Walton Beach.
The Path Forward
Elementary school is Step 1. After 5th grade, athletes naturally move into our Middle School Basketball program, where training gets more competitive and high school preparation begins. We’ve watched hundreds of kids walk through our doors as nervous 5-year-olds and leave as confident middle schoolers. That journey starts here.
